New Rules Affecting Ins. Licenses In WA

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

The Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) is contacting all licensees, insurance licensing services, insurance companies (specifically staff processing appointments), and insurance education providers about recently adopted rules in the State of Washington.  These rules affect how you submit licensing information to the OIC.

On February 28, 2011, all licensing processes identified by the OIC as an “exclusive online licensing process” must be completed online rather than in paper form. ”Exclusive online licensing processes” include:

· Applying for or renewing a license

· Adding a line of authority to your existing license

· Renewing appointments

HOW DO THE NEW RULES AFFECT ME?

The new rules require an applicant or licensee to complete licensing transactions online through the OIC’s Online Services.  As part of the new rules:

· You must provide and maintain a valid email address.  This email address is the contact point for licensing processes.

· In addition, we will phase out paper forms according to the schedule below:

Ø Starting June 1, 2011 you must complete all license renewals online

§ Licensees must be registered for Online Services.

§ Residents must renew through Online Services.

§ Non-residents may renew through Online Services or through NIPR.

§ We will no longer mail renewed licenses (you can print them through Online Services).

§ We strongly encourage you to complete your Continuing Education at least 30 days prior to your license expiration date.

Ø Starting July 1, 2011, you must complete all license applications online

§ Residents must apply through Online Services.

§ Non-residents may apply through Online Services or through NIPR.

§ We will no longer mail licenses (you can print them through Online Services).

To help you comply with these new rules, we strongly encourage you to read them at www.insurance.wa.gov.  Click on the Agents/Brokers tab and then click on the “Attention Licensees” icon to find detailed information as well as the complete revised rules.  For questions or to request registration (your user ID and password), contact OIC Licensing staff at licinfo@oic.wa.gov or call 360-725-7144.
